Oh my God, you guys. I found myself on Bainbridge Island with a little time to kill over the weekend, and the internet pointed me in the direction of Mora Iced Creamery.
Now, I like pretty much all ice cream, from prepackaged novelties on up to the fancy stuff, but I do recognize a quality cone of ice cream when I taste it. Seattle’s at no loss for great ice cream places: I like a Molly Moon’s sundae now and again, although I prefer Full Tilt and Bluebird. (And I think that Fainting Goat Gelato, up in Wallingford, is criminally underrated when it comes to frozen treats.)
But! But. I had a double-scoop cone at Mora that may be my favorite ice cream cone anywhere, ever. It was a scoop of lemon bar ice cream (eggy-smooth and creamy lemon ice cream packed with graham cracker crust chunks) on top of a scoop of lavender ice cream (not too sharp or grandmotherly, just hinting at lavender flavor) in a waffle cone. I cannot accurately explain how delicious this ice cream cone was. It was one of the most memorable ice cream cones I’ve ever had in my life. I’m planning another trip to Bainbridge sometime in the near future, just so I can stop by Mora and try some of the other flavors on their menu; a good scoop of cinnamon ice cream is the kind of thing I dream about. Before summer is over, you should scoot across the Sound and give Mora a try. There’s always the risk of a certain sentimentality to ice cream—was the ice cream so good because it was a beautiful summer day and I was overheated, or was it really just that good?—and so I’m willing to admit that the moment may have amplified the ice cream in my mind. I’d like a second (and third, and fourth) opinion on this, the most important issue of our time.
